Like some of the others posting reviews, I didn't find this book all that useful. If you're an HSP, there is a good chance that you figured a lot of this stuff out for yourself. It also has a distinct "new age" slant, which I wish I would have known before I spent money on it. Had I known, I would not have purchased it. He recommends meditation in this book, and Elaine Aron states that its "not recommended".A few of my tips for us HSP's?Lunch in your car so you have time away from people middayEat a plant-based high-protein diet.Get gentle cardio in a few days a weekMagnesium (transdermal/lotion you can discreetly use throughout the day) and calcium both help with sleep and calming.Be open about HSP ONLY with people that you have established trust with, and its recommended to not use the term HSP. Tell them that you struggle in social situations (eg crowds/large groups) for example. When the company Christmas party came up at my job, I actually did this with my supervisor and they offered to get a table away from everyone to accommodate me and sit with me so I could enjoy the evening. If you tell others in the right way, many people will want to support you!In general, I would also recommend watching self-care videos on YouTube and never allow people to make you feel guilty for taking the "down time" that you need.I will say that one piece of advice in the book that is excellent is that your own peace of mind and serenity is worth more than the money that you may earn at a higher pressure, high earning job.
I am a little surprised by the number of high stars and positive reviews this book has been given on Amazon. For me, it was a bit weak in that it didn't present any information I hadn't already come across listening to basic self-help speakers and reading the most basic of books. For instance, anyone with the slightest religious background knows the basic concept that yes, we are all going to pass away one day, so why get so worked up over everyday life. It was nice to see it reinforced I suppose, but not new at all and a lot of it felt like he was dumbing down the information so much. There is a paragraph on how you can go to an audiologist to get fitted for earplugs: that I didn't know, but it's really only worth a sentence. I think any adult who doesn't like a lot of noise already has been wearing earplugs for years and know that that's a viable option. There's also a lot of wishy-washy advice on how to tell your fellow noisy neighbor or other 'offender' so to speak, that you are a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP). So, I live with rowdy, ignorant people who wouldn't care at all about my "sensitive" central nervous system and would probably curse me out if I attempted to tell them about my sensitivity to their noise. I needed some more "real" advice other than sending a friendly note apologizing for being sensitive and hoping to appeal to their best senses. Also, many of the other tips were again, basic in nature, such as getting good sleep, eating well, avoiding processed foods, etc. I think we've all heard over the past few years how bad fast food is: I don't need a book to tell me that I should avoid processed foods. If the book were to be more specific and note perhaps a detailed plan for those who like junk food to migrate toward more healthy food in a fun way, maybe that would have been a unique way to approach it. Overall, I think the book had good advice, but my primary disappointment was that the advice was basic in nature and were things that I feel like I hear the local news say and basic online resources write about all the time. Everyone is talking about the benefits of meditation, exercise, etc. Not new or innovative to suggest. I think I would have appreciated some of the advice if it were something I rented from the library, but I'm kind of annoyed that I paid $12 for it (my fault). I don't want to make it seem like I didn't learn ANYTHING new, because I did pick up a couple of interesting tips. I would recommend to all others to first check this out at your local library, and hey, if you decide that it works for you, go ahead and purchase it.
